Biennale Matter of Art
Biennale Matter of Art Prague, taking place from the 14th of June to the 29th of September 2024, announces list of artists and program for opening weekend!
The international exhibition of contemporary art opens on June 13 in Prague, Czech Republic, with three days of performances, guided tours, and more. The invited curators Katalin Erdődi and Aleksei Borisionok combine their interests in rural change as social change and the legacies and futures of workers’ movements to tell stories of resistance and resilience from two different yet interconnected perspectives: the working-class and the rural. The exhibition and public program will be taking place at various venues until September 29, 2024.
The biennale is organized by the initiative tranzit.cz in cooperation with the National Gallery Prague and the Lidice Art Collection. In line with tranzit.cz’s politics of accessibility and the basic right to culture, all events including the opening ceremony are free of charge.
Inspired by the technique of grafting, the curators ask: How can we graft solidarities across the changing contexts of the rural and urban? Instead of letting our differences separate us, how can we create new alliances and grow stronger together? Grafting is a technique used in agriculture and medicine to join different plant parts as well as animal or human tissue. It shows us the possibility for transformation in surprising and unexpected ways, not restricted to fixed identities.
The list of participants comprises more than 30 artists and includes Italian-Libyan artist and researcher Adelita Husni-Bey, Hungarian artist duo Randomroutines (Tamás Kaszás, Krisztián Kristóf), Belarusian artist and activist Uladzimir Hramovich, filmmaker and artist Pınar Öğrenci, and Czech artists such as Natalie Perkof, Martina Drozd Smutná, Kateřina Konvalinová, and Judita Levitnerová alongside early works by Zorka Ságlová and Petr Štembera. As previously announced, the exhibition will feature eight new commissions by Kateryna Lysovenko, Alicja Rogalska, Marta Popivoda, the research group DAVRA (represented by Madina Joldybek, Zumrad Mirzalieva, and Saodat Ismailova), Zbyněk Baladrán, the collective björnsonova, Nikita Kadan, and Tomáš Uhnák in collaboration with Asia Dér, Tamás Kaszás, and Asunción Molinos Gordo.
